Landmark Spirit — Nightscape Lighting Design for the Olympic Tower
Standing at a total height of 246 meters, the Beijing Olympic Tower is the tallest tower in northern Beijing and a prominent regional landmark.
It stands prominently along the 5th Ring Road from the airport and on the central axis when viewed north from Jingshan Hill, with a modern and imposing presence.
Enjoying excellent visibility, it is highly recognizable from all urban viewing distances.
The current lighting situation is as follows: the crown is bright while the tower body is dim; the crown ring has the highest brightness but a small visible area from a distance.
In addition, the excessive use of colors makes the structure appear somewhat fragmented, and the overall effect needs improvement.
The original concept of the "Tree of Life" has not been conveyed.
The brightness ratio of the crown ring, crown top, and tower body is
83:7:1.
Current lighting: Cluttered and dazzling, the tower’s crown ring appears visually suspended.
Surrounded by colorful, dazzling buildings, the tower can hardly stand out with mixed colors.
In summary, the key points of this lighting upgrade are:
overall harmony, vertical brightness gradient, and coordinated colors.
Positioning: Elegant on ordinary days, leading on festivals.
Upgraded Effect: Elegantly stands out from the surroundings on ordinary days.
Design Concept:

Combining fundamentals and innovation to suit various needs while prioritizing energy efficiency.
In the basic daily mode, the coordinated floodlighting and dot-matrix screens on the Olympic Tower present a pure white light appearance, elegantly standing out from the colorful surroundings with an overall increase in brightness.
In the performance mode, to convey the opportunity of the Winter Olympics and showcase cultural connotations such as sportsmanship, national demeanor, and architectural features to the world, the lighting is presented through four themes.
These four themes express classic cultural concepts: Bright Ice and Snow, Olympic Rings, Origin of Life, and Traditional Beijing Charm.

Oriental Aesthetics: Elegant Visuals Aligned with Chinese Taste
To reduce the overly dazzling competition in the Olympic area, the tower, as the tallest landmark, uses restrained colors.
Following the traditional Chinese painting principles of "harmonious tones, low saturation, and sophisticated grays"—which perfectly embody Oriental aesthetics—this lighting upgrade achieves exactly this refined color charm.
By setting the brightness ratio of the RGBW channels for the luminaires, and specifying parameters such as chip bit depth (above 12-bit), frame refresh rate, grayscale refresh rate, gamma correction, and dimming threshold for the LED point light sources used on the tower, we ensure the smoothness of the display and richness of colors across multiple theme modes.
Additionally, through effect verification and optical testing of the luminaires, we guarantee the product quality and lighting effect performance.
Technical Innovation:

Precise Projection, No Light Leakage, Green & High Efficiency
- 1.Tower Facade: 8 lighting poles are installed around the tower, with 20 ultra-narrow beam floodlights on each pole, projecting light directionally onto the tower body. The light spots combine to illuminate the entire facade. Using the minimum number of energy-efficient fixtures, brightness has been increased by 15 times compared with the original design.
Precise 3° beam projection.Optimal solution verified by on-site brightness tests.
Projection distance and position were taken into account, and spot distortion was calculated.
A special lens is used to stretch the light spot vertically so that it matches the width of the tower surface, avoiding light spill and light pollution.
- 2.Olympic Rings Lighting:At the request of the Olympic Organizing Committee, two sets of Olympic Ring sculptures have been added at the tower top and the bottom entrance.Modular light units provide precise projection to evenly illuminate the ring surfaces. The luminaires rotate with the sculptures on a self-rotating platform, fully restoring the Olympic ring colors in 360°, ensuring high visibility within a 10-kilometer radius and forming a luminous landmark.
After comparing several schemes and complying with the Olympic Organizing Committee’s specifications, low-power ultra-narrow beam floodlights (2.5°) are adopted for directional projection.
The spliced light spots illuminate the rings evenly while supporting easy post-maintenance, a key requirement of the client.
The sculptures stand on rotating bases at the tower top.
The compact luminaires are installed close to the bases, rotating synchronously while effectively reducing wind resistance.

High Efficiency & Energy Saving, Green Operation
Precise projection and efficient light utilization avoid light spill, achieving green and energy-saving goals.
Building facade power density: 1.8W/m² in basic weekday mode, 5.3W/m² in theme mode, fully realizing green operation.
After the upgrade, the brightness ratio is crown ring : tower top : tower body ≈ 12:5:1 (original 83:7:1), achieving the three design improvements: overall effect, vertical brightness, and color harmony.
As a new night-view landmark of the Olympic Tower, it stands as a leading iconic building along the axis from Jingshan and viewed from the Airport 5th Ring Road.
Its dynamic light shows attract numerous visitors to watch and take photos, becoming a viral online highlight.
This embodies the landmark spirit at the heart of the design.
